What is EtherNet/IP PRP and How to Implement It with Allen-Bradley Devices

ControlLogix with PRP

Facing Network Downtime in Automation or want to Reduce Downtime Risk?

In industrial environments like process systems with critical raw materials, network failures can halt operations. EtherNet/IP PRP with Allen-Bradley devices provides zero-loss redundancy, ensuring high availability. This guide explains PRP and how to implement it with key Rockwell Automation hardware.

What is EtherNet/IP PRP?

EtherNet/IP Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) is an Ethernet standard that sends duplicate packets over two independent LANs (LAN A and LAN B) for seamless zero-time failover. Devices like Double Attached Nodes (DANs) connect to both LANs, discarding duplicate ethernet packets at the receiver. It offers zero switchover time and protects against single failures, ideal for EtherNet/IP networks in automation.

Why Use PRP with Allen-Bradley Devices?

PRP boosts reliability in tough settings. It supports high-speed communication, integrates with EtherNet/IP, and requires minimal configuration for DANs. Compatible devices include ControlLogix modules, Flex 5000 I/O, PointMax I/O, and Stratix 5200 network switches as RedBoxes.  Benefits include 100% uptime, easy scalability, and cybersecurity via CIP Security.

How to Implement PRP with Allen-Bradley Devices

  • ControlLogix 1756-EN2TP: Enable PRP in Studio 5000 Logix Designer. Connect the module to LAN A and B. Use in redundancy systems with firmware v32 or later with partnered modules.

  • Flex 5000 I/O: Configure the 5094-AENTR adapter as a DAN. Enable PRP mode and connect to dual LANs for resilient I/O communication.

  • POINT I/O: Configure the 5034-AENTR adapter as a DAN. Enable PRP mode and connect to dual LANs for resilient I/O communication.

  • Stratix Switches: Set up Stratix 5200/5400/5410 as RedBoxes. Designate ports for PRP channels in Device Manager and monitor statistics.

  • Other Devices: Include PowerFlex drives or Kinetix servos as DANs. For non-PRP devices, connect via RedBoxes for VDAN functionality.
