Using PowerFlex 525 with Single-Phase Input for 3-Phase Motors

What is a VFD and how to set it up?

Need to run a 3-Phase Motor from Single-Phase Power?

Limited to single-phase power but need to run a 3-phase motor? The PowerFlex 525 single phase to 3 phase setup allows this with the Allen-Bradley VFD, converting single-phase input to 3-phase output. Ideal for remote sites or retrofits, but proper configuration is key to avoid issues like overheating. Here are five tips covering derating, wiring, and protection.

Why Use PowerFlex 525 for This Conversion

The PowerFlex 525 supports single-phase input on its 3-phase rated models, but with derating to prevent DC bus ripple and overload. This ensures reliable 3-phase motor operation, making it versatile for applications like conveyors or pumps.

5 Tips for Proper Setup

  • Apply Derating: For single-phase input, derate the drive to 35% of its 3-phase rating to handle increased ripple and heat. For example, a 5 HP (3.7 kW) rated drive on 3-phase becomes about 1.75 HP (1.3 kW) on single-phase. Check specific output ratings for your VFD model number.

  • Wiring Techniques: Connect single-phase supply to terminals L1 and L2 (leave L3 open). Use copper wire rated 600V or higher, with gauge based on 75°C insulation. Separate control wires from power by 0.3 m (1 ft) for noise reduction; use shielded cable for motors if needed (≥75% braid coverage).

  • Circuit Protection: Use the recommended 140MT Circuit Breaker for the size VFD you have purchased.  See the Powerflex 525 User Manual for correct circuit breaker size.

  • Motor Considerations: Ensure the 3-phase motor is rated for VFD use (inverter-duty). Limit cable length per Rockwell guidelines to avoid voltage drop; add output reactors if exceeding limits for smooth operation.

  • Precautions and Testing: Monitor DC bus voltage for excessive ripple (>100V peak-to-peak may require further derating). Test under load and use Studio 5000 for parameter setup, like enabling single-phase mode if available. Consult the user manual for EMC compliance.
